I enjoy playing harps in a variety of styles. I love music from the earliest to the latest, drawing from Asian and Western sources. Moreover, I perform on instruments ranging from the concert harp to the Angular Harp (called Kugo in Japan), a very ancient type of harp.
The kugo has an L-shaped body but no front pillar. It arose in Mesopotamia around 1900 BC and soon spread to other regions of the Near East, eventually becoming a favorite instrument in local Islamic cultures where it survived until 1700 AD. Meanwhile, it entered the Silk Road and reached China around 500 AD. Korea and Japan came next, but it disappeared from the Far East by 1100. Egypt adopted it 1400 BC. Wherever it went, artists, poets, and musicians loved its beautiful shape and admired its soft and subtle sound. But angular harps hardly penetrated into Europe, which instead launched its own harp -the frame harp- although at a very late date, 800 AD. Slowly Frame harps spread over the world.

It was originally a traditional Irish tune, and became a popular song written by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. I played it on the harpist Carlos Salzedo arrangement.

Hi! Love your videos, but the kugo/konghou did not disappear from the Far East by 1100. It was certainly extant during the Ming dynasty, but definitely disappeared either before or during the fall of the Ming (in the mid 17th century)
Thank you for your interest. Yes, Kugo disappeared during the Heian period (10 - 12 century) in Japan. It was the same time as China. On the other hand, it still survives in Middle Eastern countries. It was called Chang there. But it also disappeared 300 years ago. We can see Chang also in Spain. We saw it in the picture book " Book of Games" collected by King Alfonso Xth from the 13th century. So I love to play Cantiga de Santa Maria collected by the same King Alfonso Xth.
💕
Lovely!
Thank you!
Bravo!
Music is a spiritual time machine. Thanks
yes
What is the name of the tune in Kanji?
Thank you for asking me this original title. It is 賀殿. It was transcribed by Laurence Picken from the several manuscripts, such like 鳳笙譜、新撰笙笛譜、仁智要録、三五要録. It has two movements, 破 and 急. This video is short version from 急
Absolutely lovely, Tomoko! すばらしい .... and a Merlin (that's what I have). ❤
Thank you🌺
Heavenly sounds 🎉

Beautiful, thanks you for your work
I am happy for your comment. Thank you.
Lovely!
Thank you for the comments. Unfortunately, almost Tang music (7th - 10th century) didn’t survive in China. But several music manuscripts survived mainly in Japan. So Last century a few musicologists researched the manuscripts and transcribed them into the modern notations. One of them is Laurence Picken from the Cambridge University. I am reviving this piece from Picken’s transcriptions. One more: In Japan after Tang music moved from China, it became Gagaku music and was still played by the Emperor’s court musicians. According to Shanghai Conservatory of music professor Zhao Weiping. Tang music used to be entertainment music at the court. But it gradually changed to the ceremonial, serious music for Emperors in Japan. I revive as the original entertainment court music from the scholar’s transcriptions. Thank you!
Thank you for reviving the beautiful piece!
❤️

Nice!
Thank you!
I could find the same melody (ruclips.net/video/xrkr9rIylQU/видео.html) from the Tuvan Republic as part of the ancient Hun Empire which is 700+ years older.
Are you sure this is Liangzhou melody? I find the same music piece from the ancient Hun Empire that is 700+ years older.
请问这位女士的乐器叫是什么?
So ❤Beautiful!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you, Angelica. I am happy you listen to my music.

I love this piece. I found it in a Folk Harp publication and am hoping to learn it. Nice work on this beautiful piece of music.
Very beautiful. Just hoped the strings were silk or whatever was used before.
Thank you!
Golden hands, such precision... Love your professionalism 🥚💌
My Irishness feels almost at home in this one!
I am so happy to hear that your Irishness feels almost at home!
I have sogdian genetic hertige R-Z2123 but I'm belong to Turkish Tribe Like Old Turkic Ashina Tribe
Ashina was a sogdian scythain tribe after all.
It means your ancestors came to Anatolia from the territory of Uzbekistan
@@richcrown1176in time was no Uzbekistan and sogdian are Tajik people
@@Soul-co7ki Sogdians are not Scythians.
@RUSHBRO0420 Sogdians are not Tajiks. Yagnobis are direct descendants of Sogdians. Tajiks are mostly Persians.
That should be how the song ought to be played reflecting the rich cultural diversity of Al Andalus and the spirit of convivencia
Very patronizing song against my ancestors; just because we imported wine for China we get called PUPPETS by the Chinese buyers !!!! We didn't spin and whirl because we were drunk. BTW: most Chinese nowadays have no idea what the authentic Sogdian Whirl was. It was always on one foot. You can't do that when you're drunk!!
So many pieces of the phenomenon you talk about there’s really no one person or place to blame so just enjoy the spirit if not the image you know. I’m sure the people listening didn’t find ot an unfriendly image

Fascinating!
Thank you Allan.
Bravo!
Lovely performance! In my opinion, wind instruments or voice wouldn't play the broken fifth/octave figurations found in the Dunhuang pipa scores (such as 1 - 5 - i), as they seem idiomatic for plucked string instruments.
